Beer tasting: Coopers Best Extra Stout

Cooper’s Stout
Cooper’s Best Extra Stout is the only stout made by Coopers Brewery in Australia. It is made with specially roasted black malt. If you would like to make your own Cooper’s Stout, you can buy it as a hopped malt extract or in a beer kit. This was actually my first home brew.

Appearance:
Cooper’s pours black, as a proper stout should, with a nice brown head that lasts a couple of minutes.

Smell:
The aroma has a slightly sweet malty fragrance mixed with a sour hops smell.

Taste:
Quite malty, as you would expect from a stout, with definite notes of coffee and perhaps a hint of chocolate. There is also a bitterness, particularly in the lingering aftertaste, that is a little much for my taste but would probably please hopheads.

Mouthfeel:
I would call this beer is medium-bodied and certainly creamy.

Drinkability:
They describe it as “a beacon for lovers of a hearty brew.” While I definitely love hearty brews, I can’t say it is my favorite stout. It’s a little too bitter and not as full-bodied as I like but that’s just me.

6.3% ABV
