Otakon, the epic beer run!

7 mins read

Well, after 8 years of knowing about Otakon, I finally made it there thanks to iZatherez and one other friend, Spaz. Otakon is a 4-day fan convention in the United States focusing on East Asian popular culture (primarily anime, manga, music, and cinema) and its fandom. Otakon is usually held on a Thursday (day to pick up registration material etc.) Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in late summer at the Baltimore Convention Center.

Otakon, at first look is just noisy and distraction, but underneath lays the way of the American Otaku. They are a group who have a need to disregard what the rest of society thinks and gather too lose themselves in the enchantment of Anime and Manga.

One of the pleasures of Otakon, when you are an adult, is the surrounding area and all its sites of the Inner Harbor of Baltimore. The weather was absolutely perfect this year, almost harmony at work, enabling you, between convention panels, to take a seat, eat, and drink. Oh man did we drink. Otakon for me and my friends was one of the most classic and epic beer runs ever.

Here is a rundown of the beers we had on our trip, as slightly chronicled by me on Twitter. I had to add a little for the purpose of remembrance. They are presented in the order we first had the beers. Some beers like Blue moon, were had a whole lot more than once. I think the totals for Blue Moon alone were 4 pitchers + 3 pints for the whole trip.

Growler Spaz Cricket Hill’s Jersey Summer Breakfast Ale

Growler Izatherez & Growler Gservo Colonel Blide’s Bitter, K?lsch style beer

Gservo?s thoughts. Before we left New Jersey we had the Bright Idea of having an Emergency Beer Kit. A ?just in case things got crappy? stock of 3 growlers from Cricket Hill Brewery. Owning a growler with cooler is a wonderful thing. We ended up having this beer for breakfast 2 days (don?t ask). On the last day of our trip, we had the growler out with closed coffee mugs to hide the brew. Most people did not know what the growler was, so we had no issues except this one table next to us. It really was not a problem, they recognized what the growler was and asked to sample some our ?special breakfast drink.? I was happy to share!

-Twitter-Gservo Beer log: Hook&Ladder beer, that’s all I know, mild taste, but good, I’ve been driking too much, bye for now.

Hook & Ladder Golden Ale? A crisp, clean American Ale. Perfect for extinguishing your fiery thirst or when you crave an ice-cold beer. A great step up in flavor from the macro-produced American and imported beers.

Gservo?s thoughts an OK beer. I was really tired when I had this one. not the best beer in the world but a decent one.

-Twitter-Gservo OooohM BlueMoon Beer with an Orange on the Glass very tatsty

From MillerCoors, Blue Moon Belgian White is a refreshing, medium-bodied, unfiltered Belgian-style wheat ale spiced with fresh coriander and orange peel for a uniquely complex taste and an uncommonly smooth finish. The name “Belgian White” is a reference to the cloudy white, opaque appearance of the beer. “Belgian White” also refers to the style of beer, which has been brewed in Belgium for about 300 years. Blue Moon is traditionally served with a slice of orange to complement the orange peel used in the brewing process. Blue Moon was launched in 1995.

Gservo?s thoughts I was REALLY surprised to find out the origin of this beer. It is so very good, especially with the orange in it. I had this beer the most on my trip. It went well with everything.

-Twitter-Gservo We are at the Wharf Rat, just ordered Oliver Manchester Cream Ale and Oliver Blonde Ale...

These beers are open fermented, fined and dry hopped. Served at 54?F and dispensed by pumps. As “true and proper” as ales found in any English pub.

Gservo?s thoughts. Beer was decent I liked the Manchester Cream Ale but the service was HORRIBLE! I could NEVER recommend this place.

-Twitter-Gservo New blog post: StrongBow Cider, its very good, its like cider jack http://tinyurl.com/62kwhp

Strongbow? is a crisp, premium imported cider from the U.K. which delivers maximum refreshment in an authentic, traditional English recipe.

Gservo?s thoughts This is one the best ciders I have ever had. Nuff? Said!!!

-Twitter-Gservo Drinking shock top beer, another beer with and orange in it, fascinating.

?Shock Top Belgian White a Specialty Beer From Anheuser-Busch Shock Top is an unfiltered Belgian-style wheat ale (also known as a ?White? or ?Wit? beer due to its appearance) that is naturally cloudy with a billowy white foam head, light golden hue and slight taste of orange citrus peel and coriander.?

Gservo?s thoughts Shock top beer is a Blue Moon wannabe. It?s a OK substitute but not the real Blue Moon.
